Sudden changes

What happens when things suddenly change?

New responsibilities. New expectations. New projects. New challenges. New titles. New status. New circles. New events. New risks. New challenges. New lists of stuff that needs to get done.

Well, nothing’s really changed.

That’s just the future.

So why not enjoy the moment?

Remember what remember means

Some thoughts that come to mind when it might be tough to remember:

  • I’ll remember where I put this.
  • I’ll remember how I did this.
  • I’ll remember to do this when I need to.

For the things that are easy to remember, when have you ever thought those thoughts?

Never.

If you actively think you’ll remember, you won’t.

Find a different spot. Write it down. Do it now.

Pity the Fool

Clever April Fool’s joke.

Thanks, you confused me.

Clever April Fool’s joke.

Thanks, you didn’t meet my expectations.

Clever April Fool’s joke.

Thanks, you made me feel like an idiot.

When people remember not what you say but how you make them feel, how the hell is April Fool’s still a thing?

Look back

Look back at the last 12 months of your life.

What are you most proud of?

Almost always, it’s gonna be the important, non-urgent projects you finally started. (It could be work-related, or something more personal.)

For me, it was starting on a public speaking circuit. That, and beginning to create video content on Life is NOYOKE. Some starting over on the relationship-front, too.)

If your answer to the above question is “hard to say,” it’s time to reevaluate.

My guess is that “starting a new job” or “taking up a new hobby” or “new beginnings at home” will be easy answers next year when we look back.

That was weird

Weird stuff happens. Stuff that stops you in your tracks.

But usually you let it go.

Oh, that’s weird. Hmph.

Like when your cell phone abnormally vibrates when you plug it in to charge.

Or when you feel the wind through your pants in a place you don’t normally feel the breeze.

Or when someone shows up early despite being habitually, fashionably late.

Maybe it’s nothing.

Or maybe your cell phone isn’t charging and your fly is unzipped and your friend has some big news to share.

Could that weird moment be worth an extra second of thought?

The Round of 64

You can criticize sports all you want.

They’re boring. They’re meaningless. The athletes are overpaid.

But today?

Turn on some hoops and you won’t see any of that.

Today you’ll see drama.

Real stories, real tragedy, real triumph.

It’s a reality show that’s actually real.

Tune in.

And, enjoy the ride.

(Nobody is getting anything done today anyway.)

Tonight

What are we doing tonight that’s fun?

It could be:

  • A movie.
  • A walk.
  • A dinner.
  • A game.
  • A project.
  • An outing.
  • A date.
  • A get-together.
  • A book night.
  • A ball game.
  • A bath.
  • A whatever!

You don’t need answers for every night this week. Although, it helps.

You just need an answer for tonight.

Why?

When you wake up tomorrow morning, today’s tonight will be gone forever.

Don’t waste it working. Or worse yet, don’t do nothing.

Do something fun.

Tonight.

Boredom

Boredom.

It used to happen all the time.

Maybe it was because you were younger and had less responsibilities. Or fewer opportunities. Or less wisdom.

Maybe it’s today’s technology. How can you be bored with a smartphone in-hand?

Whatever the reason, boredom happens less than it did yesterday.

But boredom can be a good thing. A cleanse.

Perhaps it’s worth seeking it out today.

For Those Confident That They’re Great

It’s nice being told you’re important. That your work is appreciated.

It’s what keeps (most of) us going.

Some people don’t need to hear this, though. They’re confident that they’re important and appreciated. And that they matter.

If this is you (it certainly isn’t me) or someone you know, there’s something worth noting:

In the grand scheme of things, nobody is that great. We’re all but tiny specs.

Sorry.

But knowing we are all actually quite small can be helpful.

It means we are all pretty great.

PS. Are you a visual person? Here’s that little ditty from Wait But Why that will put your life (and your time here) into perspective.

Fearless by Default

There’s a rare condition that permits individuals from feeling fear.

This is true. There are a handful of these thoroughly studied individuals.

They literally cannot sense fear, even in dangerous situations.

When asked, “Out of ten days, how many of them are you ‘happy or very happy?'” they say nine or ten out of ten.

Translation: These people who live without fear are outrageously, genuinely, and consistently happy — much more than “normal” folks who are keenly aware of their fears.

Moral of the story?

Stop believing, consuming, creating fear.

Love always,
The Happy Uncle.
